Gold Prospecting e-News, Issue #Issue #115 - Vale Our Friend Udo
November 18, 2025
G'day

Vale Udo Kaschner 1/06/1947 - 18/11/2025

Gidday Everyone from Bill

As you may or may not know Udo and I with Sue, Kurk and Sandra and Jen in later times have been running the Gold Prospecting WA seminars.

We have maintained our website and taught people how to find gold for 15 or so years now at our seminars and through our training, books website and talks.

Since 2022 we have not conducted our 3 day seminars in Cue WA.

Earlier, Covid in 2021 and 2022 made it impossible to do that.

Then it became difficult for a number of reasons because of sickness and other work commitments with our leases and other ventures.

Sadly Udo has been extremely ill and last night (18/11/2025) he passed away.

Udo

Udo Loved the Gold Prospecting Seminars Cue

Many of you will have spent time in Cue with Udo on his mining lease and just to talk about gold over a few drinks at his house, or he may have helped you out with advice and places to find a few nuggets.

Many of you will also have gone to the seminars we held in Cue and enjoyed the Saturday Night Barbeques. And his famous potato salad.

At the BBQs at his house in Cue Udo and his brother Michael would regale you with stories of the bush and gold nuggets that had been found.

I think around 700 or so people attended those seminars. Our last seminar was in 2021.

Many of you who attended the seminars would have dropped in to Cue to visit him, have a beer and maybe get a few more tips on where the gold is being found.

Udo Was Generous in the Community

Udo was a person who openly and freely told people where to find gold, he was the most generous and genuine person that I have known.

He was always prepared to share his knowledge - there was no-one like him in the business of metal detecting that freely helped people with his knowledge of metal detecting and showing where they could find some gold.

He was also generous in the local community winning the St John Award for outstanding Service presented by Hon Kim Beasley in 2019.

"Not Finding Gold, Got a Sore Back - Go Here"

One of the stories that really shows how generous Udo was - if you went detecting with him and he was finding a lot of nuggets and you were not, he would invariably get a "sore back" and tell you to detect in the area where he was finding the gold.

Udo was always very enthusiastic and happy when other people found gold nuggets and loved to share stories with them.

Udo's 22 Ounce Nugget Found on His Lease

There is not much else to say, I loved the guy and he was the most generous and genuine man I have ever met in my life.

Sue and I and many others will miss him greatly.

I do not know what (or if) funeral arrangements will be, but will pass them on when I do.

...As Udo would say, "Que sera - Let It Develop"

Regards

Bill,

ps Udo also used to say "If your names on it you'll find it" Nobody gets ALL the gold. There's still plenty left for you.

pps..Udo also said when everything was going wrong -"Go to plan B, Give it a miss and get on the piss". and, That is precisely what I am going to do now.

For those that have not been to a seminar in Cue and heard our story:

I have know Udo since primary school in North Innaloo Primary then to Scarborough High School. A bloody long time ago!

He was the best man at my first wedding. Over the years we drifted apart He went bush and I worked all around WA in the post office as Postmaster and in Administration.

When I retired in 2005 I wanted to follow my first love which was Geology and the modern method of prospecting for gold which is metal detecting.

There was precious little written information about metal detecting and where the gold could be found in WA.

The secret information was kept close to people's chests about where to find gold in WA so I started travelling all over West Australia to find out from the old timers about where to find gold.

When I was talking to an old prospector in Mt Magnet - Alex King at Kingies shack - the phone rang and Kingy said " Oh Hi Udo".

Now Udo is an unusual name so I said to Kingy - "Is that Udo Kaschner" he said yes.

I hadn't seen Udo for 20 years so that was an incredible co-incidence so I went up to Cue to re-unite with him.

I was also blown away by his knowledge of gold prospecting, metal detecting and his gold finds on his Mining lease.

He pretty much knew and had experienced everything that I needed to know about prospecting and metal detecting.

Once again, to illustrate his generosity, he told me the stories and "How To's" and we then published them on our website and taught them at the seminars in Cue..
